“It’s a low blow, it’s unnecessary and he should be ashamed of himself and the people there should be ashamed of themselves for applauding,” Lemon said Friday night, quoted by The Hill.
Trump, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), called out McCain for his controversial vote last year that effectively sunk the GOP effort to repeal ObamaCare. His vote in July was one of three key votes against a “skinny” ObamaCare repeal bill that ultimately helped doom the repeal effort.
“Except for one senator, who came into a room at 3 o’clock in the morning and went like that, we would have had health care too, we would have had health care too, think of that,” Trump told the conservative audience, imitating the thumbs down motion McCain made during the vote to repeal the health-care law.
“Come on,” Lemon responded on his program, noting that McCain is still being treated for brain cancer after being diagnosed last year. “It’s gauche, to say the least.”
McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain said Friday on ABC’s “The View” that she and her mother would respond to Trump next Wednesday on the program.
